Interview about the author, me!

Here’s an interview with me, all about my writing process, inspirations, author life, and more!

Okay, let's start off easy! Can you tell us a little bit about yourself?

Hi everyone! I’m Kaitlyn Davis, Kay Marie, and just Kaitlyn to my friends :) Wait, you said start off easy right? Well, the life of a writer is always a little complicated, a side effect of living in my own head so much!

I write young and new adult fantasy series under the name Kaitlyn Davis, and I write contemporary romances under the name Kay Marie! My most popular series is probably my paranormal romance, Midnight Fire, but I've also written an epic fantasy series, A Dance of Dragons, a chick lit series, Confessions, and a twisted fairy tale series, Once Upon A Curse! My newest book, Frost (Midnight Ice Book 1), is the first book in my new spin-off series to Midnight Fire, and it’s a paranormal adventure seeped in vampire and Greco-Roman lore.

How would you describe your writing style?

Ooh, tough! Each of my series has a different sort of mood and feel—from vampire adventure to fantasy fairy tale to swashbuckling sword and sorcery to laugh-out-loud romance—so each writing style is a little different! Overall, I would say I'm a sucker for an emotional rollercoaster ride that takes me from smiles to tears and always ends in a happily ever after!

Where do you get your ideas?

Anywhere and everywhere! I have a running list of crazy ideas in the notes section of my cell phone, and I’m constantly updating it! For my fantasies, a lot of my ideas come from dreams or quotes or artwork I’ve found online. And for my contemporary romances, many more of the ideas were inspired by real life!

It's a pretty safe bet that anytime I'm staring off into space, I'm really just brainstorming some crazy idea that just popped into my head! My Once Upon A Curse series was first inspired by an idea I had while watching a Disney movie—what if fairy tale characters suddenly jumped out of the screen and into real life? Somehow that morphed into a post-apocalyptic world where a fantasy universe collided with earth, bringing evil queens and magic into our technological world.

What is the most important thing you've learned as a writer?

Trust in yourself and your fans. In my humble opinion, that is the most important thing I've learned! There will always be an agent who rejects you, a reviewer who gives you one star, or someone else out there to hurt your confidence in some way. But you as the writer must believe in your work and must keep pushing forward. Anytime I have any trouble believing in myself, I think of all of my amazing fans who reach out with such enthusiastically kind words, and I know at least a few other people out there believe in me too.

My new series, Midnight Ice, was actually inspired by all of the incredible responses I've received from my fans—a sort of thank you for all of the wonderful support! So many people reached out wanting more from my Midnight Fire characters and world, and that really pushed me to pursue a spin-off adventure!

Do you ever read reviews written about your books?

Definitely! The great ones are amazing, and provide a much-needed ego-boost for those moments of complete self-doubt, but bad reviews have their place as well. No writer is perfect—at least I'm certainly not! And anytime someone gives useful criticism, I use it to improve upon my next project.

What’s the hardest part of writing a book?

What comes after! During the writing process, I get totally lost in my own world and I let the characters take me on a journey. But after, I'm thrown back into real life and that's when the doubts creep in! Will people like it? Does it suck? Is it totally boring? Is the romance completely flat? Can people see the curveball coming from a mile away? The hardest part about writing is cutting off those questions and trusting in the book I spent so much time crafting.

What sort of heroines do you like?

I love a girl who can kick some ass! A lot of my female leads have been insane fighters with mystical powers, commanding leaders with a take-no-prisoners attitude, headstrong and willful girls who go with their gut and trust their instincts. A lot of the time, these are not only my favorite characters to write but also to read, because I love living vicariously through their stories, and imagining myself in the role.

But I also think it's important to realize that a girl doesn't have to know how to throw a punch in order to be a strong warrior! Mental strengths like cleverness and cunning and bravery are just as important, if not more so! I mean, one of my favorite characters of all time is Hermione. Sure, she could hold her own in a fight, but courage, loyalty, and intelligence were her true powers!

Okay, what about the heroes?

I’ll admit it—I’m a sucker for the good guy! I know, I know—that’s not the normal response. Obviously, I love indulging in a bad boy or two (or three or four…). They’re so different from any man I would date in real life, and vicariously experiencing the dangers without any of the consequences is sort of awesome—unless there’s no happily ever after, and then my heart just feels ripped out for no reason!

Okay…back to the topic! But really, I have a soft spot for the good guys! Why can’t the knight in shining armor actually be a knight in shining armor? Sometimes, the nice guy who treats the girl right is sexy as hell—in real life for sure, but in literature too!

Now add a little shell of brooding darkness to that nice guy, and I'm done for!

Can you tell us 5 random facts about yourself?

1) My husband and I just rescued a Pomeranian/Dachshund mix who is the most adorable little pup in the world!
2) Pertaining to the above, I've become a neurotic dog mom in addition to being an author :)
3) I'm a sucker for seasonal candies and become a hoarder for candy canes, candy corn and chocolate eggs around the holidays!
4) I sort of love a cheesy moment or two in books and movies—Rom Coms are my jam!
5) I'm secretly obsessed with reality game shows and dream of being on Survivor or Amazing Race! And if I wasn't married to the love of my life, let's be honest, The Bachelorette!

What project are you working on now?

Too many! Always, too many! My mind works at a mile a minute and I'm constantly getting new ideas for a project to outline or brainstorm at a later date!

Right now, I'm focusing on the sequel to Frost because I’ve been feeling completely inspired by the story and just needed to dive in immediately. After that? Well, I’ll either work on the next book in Midnight Ice, the next book in Once Upon A Curse, or maybe a new contemporary romance for my pen name! Whatever inspires me when the time comes

Last but not least, top ten snacks while writing!

Ooh, only ten? But snacking is one of my writer’s block reliefs… :) Okay, here goes!

Hershey’s Milk Chocolate Kisses
Diet Coke
Frozen Pineapple Slices
Frozen Mango Slices
Yogurt Covered Raisins
And, okay, coffee again! I’m a bit of an addict!

Thanks for stopping by.

Thank you so much for having me!!

Discern - an award-winning and bestselling urban fantasy novel by Andrea Pearson
Nicole put her things down, not wanting anything to be in her hands when she picked up the disgusting book. She reached for it, but hesitated. Already, she could sense warmth coming from the leather cover, and she wasn’t even touching it. Its magical pulses were different from the other items—they seemed to drip off the book like sweat.
Nicole hesitated, but wasn’t sure why. It wasn’t as if something bad would happen, right? She took a deep breath and placed her hands on the book. It shivered under her touch and she cringed, pulling back. The sensation of warm leather made her flesh crawl, and she rubbed her hands and arms on her jeans, trying to get the feeling to go away.
Come on, Nicole. Don’t wimp out.
Without letting herself think about it, she picked up the book and lifted the cover.
A wind rushed over her, blowing her hair back, roaring in her ears. She caught a brief whiff of tobacco smoke before the surge of air reversed and sucked the breath out of her lungs, making her gasp.
The floor under her quaked. The book vibrated. The leather on the cover moved, muscles beneath it flexing. Nicole tried to drop the book, but couldn’t. She was unable to control her hands or fingers. They clenched so tightly, they ached. A shadow covered the pages of the book, preventing her from reading.
What was going on? She gasped again, trying to breathe against the strong wind. She felt someone touch her shoulder, but she couldn’t move. Her fingers still clung to the book. The shadow on the pages shifted, roiled, and turned toward her, the brief outline of a face visible. It watched her for several moments.
Nicole . . .
The voice was soft, deep. A strange yearning inside her made her want to read the book, to understand. To join the owner of the voice, though she didn’t know where or what he was.
The wind slowed to a gentle and familiar caress across her cheek. Familiar?
Then suddenly, it all stopped. The book fell from her hands and slammed itself shut. She backed away, her arms, legs—everything—shaking.
“What happened?” Professor Coolidge asked next to her, making her jump.
“I—I don’t know.” Nicole tried to smooth her hair, but her hands shook too much. She tucked them under her arms. “It said my name . . . and there was a shadow. In-inside it.”
Coolidge lifted the leather book. His mouth popped open in surprise. “You’ve activated a force within it—something alive.” He looked at her, fear and worry on his face. “How did you do that?”
Nicole shook her head. “I don’t know,” she repeated.
Professor Coolidge put the book back on the table. “I’m not sure what to say, other than the book is much more powerful than it used to be.” He peered at her, scrutinizing her. “And I’d love to know why it called to you, why you woke it up, when so many others have not.”
